| BINTULU (Oct 08, 2011): Bintulu
MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing recently called on foreign companies hiring
Malaysians to be concerned with the well being of these workers.
He said they should not care only for their business and leave the workers to fend for themselves when they were in trouble. He said merely lodging a police report for them and leave the matter hanging would do no good, for these workers could be totally helpless in fending for themselves in a foreign land. “I have received the SOS calls from many of these workers. In one case, a worker said when he had offended some people there, he informed his employer of the trouble.” He said the employer just took him to the police station to lodge a report and the victim was then left to fend for himself alone. He said no action was taken on this case, and when he sought help from the police again, nothing positive developed to correct the situation. “The lonely worker was lonely, living in fear of his security.” Tiong said workers were important resources of a company. “They are the ones who keep the business operation running, and if the company keeps a blind eye to his misfortune, it will not only create a negative impact, but, a matter that is totally unfair to the workers, especially when they are alone on foreign soil.” He said if the employer waited till when something serious had happened, it would be too late for him to make up for the losses. “I call for mutual understanding and support
towards a win-win situation. It is no use to cry over spilt milk when something
has happened.”
