Parliament Nov 22 2011: Tiong raised question over Government First Home Plan

KUALA LUMPUR (Nov 22, 2011): Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing today asked the Finance Ministry on the government’s plan to help young people to buy their first homes.

In his two verbal questions, he asked:

(1) On the response of the plan among the young applicants, and
(2) The number of applications received, and the criteria required, like the ages and income of the applicants.

Replying, the Finance Ministry said the government was concerned with such a need and the plan was launched in March this year.

It said the government gave out the sum amounting to 10 per cent for the first payment of the homes.

“The plan is for applicants below 35 years old and whose income does not exceed RM3, 000, or the salaries of the married couples which do not exceed RM6, 000.”

It said in Budget 2012, the government had amended some of the requirements to allow applicants buy houses of up to RM400, 000.

It said the applicants could receive loans of up to RM220, 000 to prevent them from ending up with bad debts.

“Until August 31, 2011, a total of 1,314 applications had been received with amounts totalling RM193.6 million.”

It said the government had given out loans amounting to RM29.9 Million to 205 applicants.

It said the successful applicants were mainly those in their 20s, including 80 of them aged between 24 and 26 and 58 between 27 and 29 years old.
