| BINTULU:
Member of Parliament for Bintulu Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said he would
meet officers of the Ministry of Education to discuss the tough questions
set by the Examination Board for Chinese language papers in PMR and SPM
examinations. “I have been told that many students choose not to sit for
the SPM Chinese language papers as they are too difficult to answer,” he
said.
Tiong hoped that it was not the Examination Board’s intention to discourage students to take up Chinese subjects at national schools as learning one’s mother tongue is advocated by the government. He was also of the view that the Education Ministry should review and do away with the stipulation that a teacher would be assigned to teach Chinese subjects in national school only when there are 15 students or more enrolled for the subjects. He also pointed out that another issue he would discuss with the Education Ministry was that in certain national secondary schools, teachers who were posted and assigned to teach Chinese subjects were reassigned by the principals to teach other subjects. Tiong said this at the opening of a talk on ‘Techniques In Answering Examination Papers on Chinese Subjects of PMR and SPM’ jointly organised by the Youth Wing and Women Section of Bintulu Teochew Association at ParkCity Everly Hotel here yesterday. Four teachers and an official from the Education Department in Kuala Lumpur conducted the talk and disseminated information on techniques in answering examination questions during the one-day activity. Earlier, Tiong also expressed concern that certain schools also prevented students from sitting examination on Chinese subjects if their performance was unsatisfactory. “These principals are only concerned in wanting their school to score high passing rate in the PMR and SPM,” he said. Tiong reiterated that he would be discussing with the police to resolve the increase in number of students getting involved in drug abuse, fighting, bullying and sex scandals. He said the main agenda was to find out who were responsible for paddling drugs outside the school compound. He also commended the association for organising the healthy activity and looked forward to see more of such activity held in the future. such
