| The
Government has decided to withdraw several proposed amendments to the Road
Transport Act 1987, including those relating to fines for traffic offences
and raising the legal driving age from 16 to 17.
The second reading of the Road Transport Amendment Bill has been deferred to the next Dewan Rakyat meeting in June. The Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Council (BNBBC) had objected to some of the proposed changes, including the move to increase the maximum fine from RM300 to RM1000. Minister in the Prime Minsiter's Department datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said after discussions with BNBBC and various parties, the government had decided to withdraw the amendments in the interests of the people. "We found the amendments would burden the people, especially the low-income group and those living in rural areas" "Youth in kampung use motorcycles to go to school. If we increase the driving age from 16 to 17, it will affect their studies." "As
for compound for traffic offences, not everyone can afford to pay RM1000"
