| BINTULU : Chinese students
are urged to take up courses on forestry, agriculture, livestock
breeding and aquaculture rather than scrambling for science related
courses in the institutions of higher learning.
Member of Parlaiment for P216 Bintulu Dato Seri Tiong King Sing said they must dsicard the mentality that there was no monetary prospect in forestry or agricultural related course when compared to those who had graduated with a degreee in medicine, finance or law. Tiong also reminded Chinese parents not to exert pressure on their children to become lawyers, doctors but should let their children to choose the disciplines which they were interested in. He remarked some of these students could not endure such pressure or high expectations from parents and eventually fail to complete their studies while studying overseas. Tiong proposed the Federation of Bintulu Registered Chinese Associations (FBRCA) to provide counselling or career guidance for SPM and STPM school leavers to find out which field of disciplines they were interested. Tiong said this at the opening of the 19th Malaysia Federation of Foochow Associations (MFFA)Sports Carnival at the dinner recpetion party for participants at Tanjong Batu Beach Seafood Restaurant Thursday evening. He also pointed out the agricultural sector was a lucrative business which they must seriously considered. "Our country imported RM4.5 billion worth of agricultural related products in 2004 ; the Chinese youth can venture into planting many of these agricultural products to fill up the shortage in the domestic market. Whereby the Malaysian Government can save substantial sum of money annually and channel it for other development programmes for the benefits of the people," noted Tiong. He cited an example where there was one Malay woman in Peninsual Malaysia who earned an average of monthly income of RM7,700 by merely planting and selling long beans and cucumber. He also urged the Agriculture Department to provide technical guidance and subsidies to assist the local farmers to increase their productivity and producing quality agricultural products suitable for export. Tiong and President of MFFA, Dato Tiong Su Kuok also witnessed the handing over of RM250,000 to FBRCA's President Pau Chiong Ung from Bintulu Foochow Association's chairman Ting Siew Ching as the Educational Fund initiated by Tiong earlier. Tiong who had earlier donated RM500,000 for the starting up of the RM1 Million Educational Fund pledged again that he would give RM1 to RM1 if the FBRCA could raise RM3 million by end of year 2006. Also speaking were Dato Tiong Su Kuok and Ting Siew Ching as well as the organising chairman for the sports carnival Ling Kuok Kai. Among those present were Senator Hii Tiong Kuoh, Temenggong Michael Sim, local dignitary Dato Seri Yek Ming Ek and representatives from World Federation of Fozhou Associations. |
