06/03/2004:SNAP Candidate Resting Hope on Ex Bintulu MP

BINTULU: Sarawak National Party (SNAP) candidate for Bintulu, Dr Lau Hieng Kee is resting his hope on the popularity of former Member of Parliament Ting Ling Kiew to enable him to pull through in the coming Parliamentary elections.

Interviewed on Friday evening, Dr Lau described Ting as the "guarantee" following the latter's success to become an elected-representative in four ocassions.

"There are still people supporting him and had been very successful, either as an opposition or with the Barisan Nasional (BN). His image seen by the people is very important and if I am not doing well, it will affect him (Ting) as well," he added.

Lau, who is hailed from Sibu, is also the SNAP Kidurong chairman and expected to face a tough task in the parliamentary election that had been fixed on March 21.

Others vying for the seat would be the incumbent Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing, who is also the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) treasurer-general and Democratic Action Party (DAP) state deputy chairman, Chiew Chin Sing.

A specialist in communication technology and holding a doctorate degree, Lau added that it would need "a big investment" to win in a tough area like Bintulu but he felt that SNAP would still have a root here.

"Just like a company. You left the company but the company would still be there," he added to maintain SNAP's existence and their support in Bintulu, which they had won in Bintulu through Tiong, who was then still with the party.

On his election plan, Lau said that he would be "driving messages on humanity" to the constituents with lesser political talks.

Lack of understanding to humanitarian had led to the downfall of politicians and Lau said that even the Barisan Nasional was not spared from having its image jeopardized when some of their members were arrested for some alleged offences.

Nevertheless, he agreed that there were some politicians who had been able to serve the people sincerely as he named Science, Technology and Environment Minister Datuk Lau Hieng Ding, MCA Public Services and Complaints Department head Michael Chong and former Bukit Bintang MP Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

He also saw that the rural people in the constituency were also being deprived from enjoying good telephone communication system that had led them to receive limited information. "The limitations had even caused a lot of people not able to understand the role of a Member of Parliament," he added.

While pledging to start a new telephone system for the rural populace should he won in the election, he said: "That again would have to take time, where I would have to get the licence first from the Energy, Communications and Multimedia Ministry," he added.
