| BINTULU: Democratic Action Party (DAP) will not be able to safeguard
the interests of Sarawakians even if they won in this parliamentary
elections.
Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Dr Abdul Taib Mahmud said DAP had shown that they do not understand the situation in Sarawak and with their incapability to manage the rakyat, they would turn to their Peninsular based leaders to dictate their actions. "Do not vote for them (DAP) as they would never be able to defend the rakyat in Sarawak," he said when officiating at the laying of foundation stone ceremony for the Bintulu Waterfront Promenade here on Thursday. The opposition's ignorance on the situation in Sarawak prevailed when they attempted to make the SESCo electricity rate as an issue in the current parliamentary campaign period, by comparing it with that of Sabah and Peninsular Malaysia. Abdul Taib added that DAP had failed to acknowledge the efforts of the Barisan Nasional (BN) Government to reduce the rate in the State down to 30 percent for consumers who are using 100 units and below. He explained that the electricity tariff for industrial usage was also made lower to attract more investment into the sector that eventually would generate greater opportunity for employment and businesses for the rakyat. "The opposition had failed to acknowledge how we planned the development in Sarawak for the benefits of the rakyats (to obtain electricity supply), where 60 percent of them are living scatteredly in villages and longhouses throughout this large State. We had to come out with subsidy that sometime could reach as much as RM25,000 per house against the subsidy issued in Peninsular Malaysia, which is between RM3,000 to RM4,000 per house," he added. In spite of the arduous task to develop a state as large as Sarawak, the Chief Minister stressed that the Barisan Nasional government had worked steadily and gradually that enable the rakyat to enjoy the present remarkable development achievement. Apart from DAP, he also remarked on the presence of candidates of Sarawak National Party (SNAP) in this parliamentary elections as mere "kermit crab entering an empty shell of a dead snail." This had been proven when SNAP decided to take an ex-Keadilan member to stand against Barisan Nasional's Joseph Entulu Belaun in Selangau and a former PBDS member who joined SNAP to become a candidate to contest against BN's Douglas Uggah in Betong. Abdul Taib revealed that behind all the SNAP candidates in this elections are frustrated politicians who wanted to topple him in the infamous "Ming Court Affairs" in 1987 and refused to accept the reality created from the politics of development. "Some of those playing this politics wanted to retire me but they did not contest (in this election). SNAP had no ideology nor direction as they don't bother whether our State will be destroyed, our development will be slow or our rakyat will suffer. They only care about the positions that they would get and anyone could come in like kermit crabs entering an abandoned shell," he added. He also advised the rakyats on the presence of "playful oppositions" who emerge only during the election time but did not make any kind of contribution during ordinary days. "This oppositions would search for the worst thing first and ignoring the good things. Nevertheless, as long as the rakyat voted for the Barisan Nasional,
they are voting for progress but if the opposition is chosen, it means
to oppose the development methods until the development could not be implemented,"
he added.
