15/03/2004:Tiong Regrets over Fighting Incident in National Services Training Camp

BINTULU: Barisan Nasional candidate for Bintulu, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing expressed his regret with the fighting incident that occurred at National Services Training Camp Sunday evening and called for stern actions against those involved.

Speaking to reporters after visiting the camp, he hoped the Defence Ministry should be more discreet in the future before employing anyone to serve at such camp.

"I am urging the Ministry to investigate this matter thoroughly and they should find those with proven good disciplinary record before finalising their staff so that our trainees could really be build up to be disciplined citizens," he added.

In the incident that was reportedly occurred about 5pm at the camp, about 20 kilometres from here, three medical staff were involved in a fight with several trainees due to an earlier misunderstanding.

It was learnt that prior to the incident, the trio had gone to the town centre here to spend the weekend since there was no training for the day.

On returning to the camp, one of the staff involved had allegedly reprimanded two trainees that resulted in a fight, before several more trainees joined in to help their peers.

Other staff and trainees intervened to stop the fight which they succeeded only after four trainees were injured and had to seek outpatient treatment at the divisional hospital here.

Tiong hoped that parents of the trainees would not over-react in view of the incident and stressed that the Barisan Nasional government would always placed the interests of the trainees above anything else.

"It is sad to note that this thing happened due to the irresponsible act of certain people. This incident is not reflecting the whole situation at the camp which had been intended for a good cause," he added.

Meanwhile, Bintulu District Police Chief Supt Sulaiman Abdul Razak had confirmed that things had returned to normal at the camp on Monday.
