24/02/2004:Tiong Disastifies on Bintulu-Miri Road Maintainance

BINTULU: The road contractor involved in the maintenance works along Bintulu-Miri Road appears to have not learning from past results, judging by the way they carry out the cement stabilization and re-sealing works.

Bintulu Member of Parliament, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said the contractor had been applying the same mixing method as those for the previous works on the same stretch, as well as for Bintulu-Tatau Road, which had proven to be not durable.

"The practice of pouring the premix and cement on a long part of the road and then left it for a week before making the final resurfacing is a backward technology and potholes could emerge again in one to two months time," he told reporters here.

"JKR (the Public Works Department) should not be resting their calculation on paper but they had to go to the ground and check for themselves," he added.

He felt that the department and the contractor should have learnt from the method applied in the restoration works for the Bintulu-Sebauh Road, which had until now had shown no sign of potholes as compared to the Bintulu-Miri Road.

In the case of Bintulu-Sebauh Road, the final surface was laid at every 100 metres after the cement mix had been laid.

The Member of Parliament also rejected the excuse by the contractor that their machinery was insufficient to carry out similar method of works.

"If the contractor cannot afford to get a complete set of machinery, it shows that they are not really interested about carrying out the contract," he added.

Meanwhile, he also commended the efforts shown by the contractor for the Bintulu-Airport Road project for improving the tidyness of the road that could facilitate road users that passed through.

At the same time, he also urged the contractor to keep to its pledge to complete the project on time.
