| BINTULU: Women's groups had always played an important role in ensuring
the stability of politics and had fortified the position of Barisan Nasional
to form a government with ability to serve the people.
Paying tribute to the contribution of women, Bintulu Member of Parliament Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said they would always placed the importance of the future generation in determining their decisions. "They could not be easily swayed away by sentiments played in the height of political activities and had always assisted the government," he said when speaking to officiate at a consumerism seminar on Financial Management and the Role of Price Watch Volunteers at the Regency Plaza Hotel here Saturday. Expressing his appreciation to the total support shown by majority of the women to the Barisan Nasional as proven in the past records here, he was very confident that undivided loyalty shown by them would continue to prevail as the next parliamentary elections closed in. Amidst the excitement to the arrival of the impending election, he warned on the existence of individuals attempting to create confusion by claiming that he was still with the Sarawak National Party (SNAP), when in actual fact he had joined Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP). These individuals were taking advantage, particularly of those people with limited access for accurate information in rural areas, with the intention of steering the people away from supporting the Barisan Nasional. "I am stressing here that SNAP is no longer in the Barisan Nasional and our Prime Minister had also confirmed that they (SNAP) are not in the Barisan Nasional," said Tiong. He also commended the efforts of the Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Ministry to organised the seminar as it could lead the society towards becoming more knowledgeable on consumerism issues. The formation of the Price Watch Volunteers scheme here was also hailed by the Member of Parliament as a move that could safeguard the interests of the consumers through provision of accurate and accelerated information, while deterring the business community from committing inethical practices. Earlier, the Ministry's Bintulu branch chief, Ahmad Abdullah explained that the seminar was aimed at creating awareness among consumers on the importance of financial management and to brief on the role and functions of the price watch volunteers. The Ministry's assistant director Jamaluddin Osman was also present at the ceremony. |
