06/06/2003:JKR Urged to Expedite Tar-Sealing for Bintulu-Tatau Road

BINTULU: The Public Works Department (JKR) has been urged to look into expediting the process of tar-sealing the surface of the Bintulu-Tatau Road and at the same time ensuring those involved in the current road constructions were according to their specifications.

The Member of Parliament here, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said that the length of the unsealed road were quite long and it could pose danger to the road users frequenting it.

"The Bintulu-Tatau Road is part of an important link for people to travel between here to Sibu or Kuching and for such a length of construction, it is quite dangerous for the road users and it need to be tar-sealed as fast as possible," he added.

Being a frequent traveller on that stretch himself, Tiong noted that even some part of the resurfacing works carried out had not been satisfactory.

To his understanding, the works should have employed the pavement technology as applied in the previous road project involving the Bintulu-Sebauh Road to ensure that the surface could last for a long time.

Contradictly, he observed that the base for the Bintulu-Tatau Road had appeared to be different from that of Bintulu-Sebauh Road with some part of the sub-base had already showing signs of damages.

He also claimed that the bitumen mix for the resurfacing works had not been done according to the right standard and he anticipated that if the works remained unchecked, it would not be surprising to see potholes emerging on the surface in just few months after being sealed.

In addition, he said the sub-standard works would only waste the allocations that had been approved by the Government for the project.
