| BINTULU: The continuous operations by the police against entertainment
outlets here have raised the confidence of the public in maintaining peace
and order here while weeding out illegal activities here.
The Member of Parliament, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing expressed his gladness with the successes achieved by the police and praised the determination shown by the officers particularly to crack down illegal entertainment joints, drugs abuse, prostitutions and illegal gamblings. "I hope they will continue with their good job and the people is now more confident with the police force and definitely they can create a situation for peace and prosperity," he remarked in respond to a numerous operations conducted by the police here lately. At the same time, he also advised public members not to be alarmed by the sudden surge in the number of police operations, as the situation did not indicate that public security here is under threat by illegal activities. He believed that the police could have done a low profile surveillance works on the illegal entertainment joints as well as licensed joints that violated the regulations imposed on them. "Those who carried out the illegal activities or violating the regulations had been given sufficient chance by the police to stop with what they are doing, but some operators seemed to be stubborn and continued with the illegal business," he said. Tiong himself had made repeated public advices for the illegal operators to stop doing their illegitimate businesses and start following the law. The MP also hoped that police would make thorough investigation on those who had been arrested not only to identify possible masterminds but also to avoid releasing the guilty ones merely due to lack of evidences. He also said that the firm stand taken by the police would serve as
a warning to would-be offenders from attempting to carry out any kind of
illegal activities here.
On another note, Tiong was also confident with the new State Police Commissioner, Datuk Fauzi Saari whom he believed had wealth of experience and could guide Sarawak into becoming a prosperous state with low crime. He saw the potentials of the State to start continuing to enjoy economic growth following the end of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) where that could signal the increase in tourism activities. In this regards, he hoped the police would look at the situational changes taking place as a challenge that had to be addressed properly, particularly in playing their role to facilitate the tourism sector. He saw one of the areas that deserved to be look upon is Niah, which had been known as a favourite destination for tourists and he felt the need to station a police officer of at least a chief inspector level to head the task there. Tiong added that all police personnel would continue to safeguard their image and should not tolerate any of their members from committing any kind of act that could jeopardize their reputations. "I am sure that with the new CP, police in the State will be able to weed out all the blacksheeps in their department and thus strengthening public confidence in their ability," he added. |
