15/04/2003:Tiong Urged Drastic Action Against A Machinery Workshop

BINTULU: The Bintulu Member of Parliament Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing will ask the local authority to take drastic action against a heavy machinery workshop operator at Desa Damai commercial centre here who had piled up under-repaired vehicles and repairing materials beyond its premise.

The operation of the workshop which is near to the Desa Damai housing estate here had raised concern among the residents there after the operator carried on with the trade without considering its impact to the health and environment.

The machinery as well as repairing materials that occupied almost the whole backlane of the commercial building had also raised concern as it blocked the traffic flow and could hinder movement during emergency situation.

After being advised by Tiong who visited the area recently, the operator did a little bit of cleaning up but to the MP's dismay, it was not sufficient to alleviate the actual problems.

"I will not hesitate to ask the authority concerned to take drastic action against the workshop owner if he failed to clear the area in question accordingly," he told reporters here recently.

On the residents' repeated complaints about the Sibiyu Road upgrading works that had been partly done and delayed for several years, Tiong cynically said: "I just don't know how thick is the face of the developer now after hundreds of complaints about the project had been received all these years."

Nevertheless, he urged the local authority to immediately terminate the contract awarded to the developer and there should not be anymore excuses for the delay, which had placed the people staying around the area and road travellers in difficulties for such a long time.

Tiong also urged the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) and the developer of a housing estate near SK Sebiew Chinese here to work out a plan to build proper culvert near the area to alleviate the problems of flash flood.

The residents in the area had complained that since the commencement of the development project, their houses had been hit by flash floods for several times during heavy downpour.

As the flash floods were eventually found to have been caused by poor drainage as well as earth filling works conducted there, Tiong called on those involved in the project to construct proper culvert that would facilitate water discharge.

"It would be better for them to construct the culvert now rather than later as to delay it would involve extra cost and work," he added.
