BINTULU - Member of Parliament for Bintulu Dato' Seri Tiong king Sing took proprietors of karaoke lounges and night entertainment outlets to task for flouting the laws and allowing their premises to be used for unhealthy activities.

"Such premises are supposedly for people to relax and unwind but some of them have turned into unhealthy premises where immoral activities and drug abuses are taking place," he said.

Tiong said the public should be aware from newspapers' reports especially in Peninsular Malaysia where many innocent girls were raped and some even forced into prostitution after drinking spiked drinks offered by their acquaintances or friends at these premises.

As the people's elected representative, Tiong, said it was his obligation to expose such tricks played by the unscrupuluos people with ulterior motives when they befriended young innocent girls at these outlets.

He said this at the opening of the 18th Mandarin Songs Singing Competition organised by Persatuan Bersatu Besar Bintulu held at Civic Centre here Saturday night.

Tiong also hoped parents would monitor on the activities of their children closely. He added he personally coming across young people who were high on drugs impulsively shaking their heads and bodies the moment they heard blasting music at entertainment centers.

Tiong also commended the ongoing efforts undertaken by police in conducting raids at karaoke lounges and pubs here for operating beyond the operating hours as stipulated in the trading licence or operating without licences approved by the local authorities.

"The recent feedback I obtained from the police operations clearly shoe that many who were detained were students who had been tested positive of taking drugs. Among them were also illegal foreigners and women believed to be involved in immoral activities."

Tiong assured he would urged the government to impose more stringent punishment against those who involved in drunken driving or fighting, selling of illictly brewed liquor as several cases of murder and fighting occurred this year were related to drunkenness.
