BINTULU - The younger generation of the Chinese community has been urged to uphold their traditional practice of filial piety. Bintulu Parliament Member Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing made this call at the 'Revering the Elderly' Dinner cum Cash Incentive Award Presentation held jointly by the Bintulu Foochow Association and its Youth and Women Wings at the civic Centre here last Saturday. Tiong was saddened that some Chinese youths were not willing to support their aged parents on the pretext that they were not financially well-off while others who were financially sound could not be bothered about their parents. He added that based on the statistics obtained from the Malaysian Federation of Senior Citizens Associations, there were about 60,000 old folks who needed various kinds of assistance. "The figure is growing annually. The 1999 statistics showed that out of the 2,200 residents at the 188 Homes For the Aged in the country, 26.9 percent were from the Chinese community," he said. He pointed out that even though the number was small, he considered it as dishonourable as it reflected that the Chinese community had gradually discontinued with their long cherished virtue of caring for the elderly, especially their aged parents. Tiong later presented incentive awards to members' children who obtained good grades in their public. |
