BINTULU - Member of Parliament for Bintulu Dato Seri Tiong King Sing has urged the Board of Management for Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd to increase its number of directors to 15 from the present three. Tiong said Bintulu Port as very exceptional with only three members including the chairman while Boards of Management of other ports in the country had between 10 to 15 directors. He proposed the new expanded Board of Management should include Independent Directors and appointed Directors from local commercial or private sector. "More members on the Board of Management can help the Board to save money and become more ac-countable and transparent as they can help to check the performance of the company." Tiong made the call in the wake of several complaints forwarded to him lately by some Bumiputra contractors claiming that they were not awarded with the tenders although their bids were the lowest. "These Bumiputra contractors are experienced and have worked with Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd. They were amazed to see that those with higher bids awarded the tenders instead," said Tiong. He described the situation as unhealthy practice and urged the Ministry of Finance to delay awarding all tenders put up by Bintulu Port Sdn Bhd pending full assessment and investigation on why lowest bidders were not awarded the projects. |
