BINTULU - School bus operators are reminded to play a role by helping to instill good moral values and discipline among students while ferrying them to and from schools.

Member of Parliament for Bintulu Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said school bus operators should also report to the parent-teacher associations (PTAs) or school principals on any misconduct of their student-passengers.

If possible, he added, they could reprimand any misbehaving student on the spot when caught in the act.

Tiong said at the 4th installation ceremony of Bintulu school Bus Owners Association at Kintown Hotel Saturday evening, that he had personally witnessed some students behaving intimately among themselves while waiting for their transport.

He also urged members of the association to pay extra attention on the safety of their student-passengers.

"You have been entrusted with a great responsibility by parents to ensure the safety of their children," he said.

Tiong later announced a grant of RM5,000 for the association to run some of its annual activities.

Earlier, organising chairman Samin Lau revealed that 22 children of the members had been selected to receive cash incentives for achieving excellence results in their public examinations.

He thanked Tiong for sponsoring the incentive scheme.

Datuk Yek Min Ek, community leaders and the representatives from the police, Road Transport Department, Puspakom and similar associations in Kuching, Sibu and Miri were also present at the event.
