BINTULU - The fate of the four girls who went missing in the sea near Kuala Nyalau here since earlier this week remained unknown as the search operation continued to be expanded on Saturday to cover areas between Kuala Sibuti southward to Kuala Tatau.

Two claims were reportedly heard stating that a body was spotted by crew of a cargo vessel passing Kuala Suai While two other bodies were spotted by a tugboat off Tanjung Kidurong, but until late Saturday, both claims could not be confirmed.

The search and rescue operation was also beefed up with the arrival of a Royal Malaysia Air Force (RMAF) B200T fixed-wing aircraft fro Labuan, commandeered by Capt Mohd Zaniel Kushairi and four crew to extend the coverage to about 50 nautical miles near the coast, as well as up to 50 nautical miles offshore. The operation, which started with surface search by a marine police vessel and two speedboats, were expanded to air search on Friday with the arrival of Nomad aircraft from Sabah that was chartered by the Barisan Nasional's Bintulu people's Service Centre. The aircraft piloted by Capt Fong Shau Kah and assisted by second officer Jaysree Wahid Jaikol continued the search until Saturday to concentrate on the sea off Kuala Nyalau to Kuala Sibuti in the morning and offshore Tanjung Kidurong to Kuala Tatau in the afternoon.

Marine police chief Insp Hamkar with several other police officers and press members were also onboard the aircraft to join in the nearly nine-hour painstaking search. Bintulu Member of Parliament Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing, police chief Supt Sulaiman Abdul Razak and Bintulu Cnetral Police Station head Chief Ins Hasmeera Hassan also went to visit the site on Saturday, were the four girls had reportedly gone missing and feared to be drowned after being hit by a big wave on August 18.

The missing girls were identified to be Looi Li Shien, 15, Chew Song Chien, 16, oth from Perak, Chan Kin Nan, 16 and Pamelia Bong Kui Yan, 19, both of Kuala Lumpur. Prior to being reported missing, they were said to have been coming in for a vacation at the site which was said to belong to a private resort.

Another girl, Lorraine Bong, 22, a cousin of Pamelia managed to survive and found her way back to the beach.

The search would continue on Sunday.
