KUCHING - Member of Parliament for Bintulu Dato' Seri Tiong king Sing has urged the Acting Minister of Finance and the Minister of Transport to intervene to speed up the completion of residential units for staff of Bintulu Port Sendirian Berhad.

Speaking in Parliament last Wednesday in support of the King's Royal Address, Tiong said he was disappointed over the delay in the completion of the BPSB's staff quarters meant to cater to the housing needs of 215 employees, the majority of whom were from the low-income bracket.

The text of his speech was released to the Tribune yesterday.

Tiong said the housing project was supposed to have been completed in September 2000, and hoped that BPSB would give priority attention to it.

According to him, the intending occupants of the yet-to-be completed houses were currently paying high rents for their present accommodation. The rents and repayment of bank loan for the houses which were yet to be completed had become a financial burden to the majority of these staff, Tiong added.

He hoped that the housing problem faced by the port staff would be solved as soon as possible, with the relevant authorities in BPSB taking the appropriate action.

He also sought clarification on some of the overseas investment trips organised by BPSB as they incurred heavy expenses.

Meanwhile, he expressed his gratitude to the Government for the rapid development in Bintulu, especially in the expansion of petrochemical industry.

He was pleased to note that Bintulu Port Authority had been listed on the first board of the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange, saying that this bore testimony to the big revenue generated by the petrochemical operations requiring port services.
