BINTULU-Unity and spirit of patriotism are important elements to ensure peace
and stability in the Malaysian population which are represented by communities
of diversed ethnics, religious and cultural backgrounds. The Bintulu Member of Parliament, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said these elements
were also need to be nurtured among university students who would be the next
generation of citizens to steer the nation.
"Couple with that, we ought to be grateful for being able to savour independence
while enjoying the freedom to speak, choose our religion or to be involved in
politics which all are protected under the Federal Constitution," he added.
Speaking at an Independence Appreciation Night organised in conjunction with
the Kembara Jalur Gemilang's stopover at Universiti Putra Malaysia Campus here
(UPMKB) Thursday night, he said people in Malaysia were fortunate compared to
those in other countries.
Citing the situations in the Middle East, Tiong hoped Malaysians should learn
from the sufferings of the people in Palestine where they had been left exposed
to oppressions and manipulations.
A stong government coupled with the strong backings of the rakyats were the
essentials that helped Malaysia to be respected in the global front but at the
same time, Tiong also reminded them of the threats and challenges facing them.
Regardless of the future upcomings, he added that the new generation in the
country should safeguard the good moral values that had been inherited by their
forefathers, whose sacrifices should never be forgotten to achieve the present
freedom and sovereignity.
In conjunction with the Kembara Jalur Gemilang, the Kelab Generasi Warisan
UPMKB presented a pantomime on independence, Dikir Barat, poetry recitation
and patrotic songs by their choir group.
