SEBAUH - The Member of Parliament here, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing, will recommend
the cancellation of the contract awarded by the Education Ministry to the contractor of
the new Sebauh government secondary school if it fails to complete the project in time.

He said the contractor had been given a final opportunity to carry on with the project that
had been delayed causing much inconvenience to some 1,200 students of the school.

"They (the contractor) failed to realise the problems faced by the students, particularly
those staying in the dormitories and I have raised these problems a couple of times in the
Parliament," he added.

Speaking at the SMK Sebauh prize-giving day, yesterday, he disclosed that he had
personally inspected the site of the project and was concerned over its slow progress.

He urged school auhtorities to bring up problems besetting education infrastructure
projects and not keep quite about them.

On the present site of SMK Sebauh, he assured several measures had been taken to
accommodate the students with decent place to study. Among the measures was to
upgrade the present dormitories.

He also urged the students to be serious in their endeavours and strive to restore the
position of SMK Sebauh that once was the best school in the Division.

Praising the school principal, Umpang ak Keling, for improving the situation in the school,
Tiong added that the efforts of the principal alone would not be sufficient to enable them
to achieve the objective of becoming the best.

"Students must show their appreciation to the teachers and parents by striving to be the
best. The teachers must be willing to work extra without expecting extra rewards while the
parents must also support the efforts of the school."

Earlier, Umpang disclosed that the students of the school had managed to improve their
results in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination by eight percent from 54.4
percent in 2000 to 62.4 percent last year.

Umpang said the school would introduce extra classes carried out on voluntary basis by
the teachers for the exam students to improve the results.

Bintulu district officer Philip Ho Thian Huat and SMK Sebauh parent-teachers association
head, Agnes Mampang were also present at the function.
