Member of Parliament for Bintulu Tiong King Sing today labeled those responsible
over the writing
and circulation of a series of poison pen letters to members of the public as dastardly cowards.

He said these unscrupulous people, who used false names and addresss and even false organizations ,did not have the courage to criticize the person or persons whom they targeted but chose the cowardly ways.

"These people are sociopath, stooping to the lowest ebb of morals in carrying out character assassinations. What they write is totally mindless. They would rather be anonymous armchair poison-pen letter authors rather coming out in the open."

"I advise these people to come out in the open. They could talk to me and thrash out the dissatisfaction that they have against me or the police or any Government agencies, " he said.

Tiong said that he was prepared to face criticisms from the public if he had done wrong to the rakyat or had his performance as Member of Parliament beyond the people's expectation. "I would like to apologize to the people of Bintulu if I could not fully fulfill their wishes as expected."

He said of late, there had been series of poison pen letters written and circulated in public accusing the police for being irresponsible and corrupt by allowing gangsters operating in Bintulu.

The poison-pen letters also accused several influential politicians and even a few royal family members from the Peninsular as being connected to the gang.

He said he had checked the authenticity of these letters and expectedly found that this unscrupulour group of people resorted to using false names and false addresses, some of which belonging to associations such as Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), Chiese associations, and the homes of unsuspecting members of the public, of which the identities of the writers were non-existent.

Copies of these letters were sent to the Yang Di Pertuan Agong, the Prime Minister, Ministry of Home Affairs and Inspector General of Police, apart from circulating in Bintulu.

"On first impression, the letters look official, honest and decent but when read in between the lines, these are the ones that are written with malice and bad intentions in an apparent and relentless effort to tarnish the reputation of some local politicians and police officers, " he added.

He said these unscrupulous people must stop churning poison -pen letters immediately and repent, adding that there were avenues that they could channel their frustrations and dissatisfaction.

"Apart from the police and government agencies which they could voice their dissatisfaction, they also have the State Assemblymen and an MP to thrash out their grievances."

"As much as I appreciate their criticisms, they must be brave enough to have their facts counter-chechked rather than creating issues unnecessarily. I am sure these issues were politically motivated, aimed at bring down the police and local politicians, " he said, adding that these poison-pen letters would on cause confusion among the public and a displaced impression on the efficiency of the police and Barisan Nasional government leaders.

On the alleged inefficiency of the BIntulu police in curbing crimes by gangsters, Tiong said there was no proof and evidence to show the police were corrupt or had protected the gangsters. "The police are professionals and I believe in the efficiency of the police, as they have been monitoring the crimes executed by gangs in Bintulu. The cirme rate is very well under control, " he said.

"I have urged the public several times in the past that if any members of the community had any information on the criminal activities carried out by gangs and gangsters, they should come forward to inform the police and they could do so by coming over to my service center, provided that they have proof and evidence to back up their allegations ," he said.

Tiong said the public should also bear in mind that many gang members had repented and were trying hard to be accepted in the society. They were making amends to their life and turning into new leaf by taking decent jobs to earn a living. "The society must give them a chance as it will take some time for this sort of people to condition and adapt themselves."

Tiong reiterated his advice to secret societies in Sarawak especially in Bintulu to make amends to their life and turn into new leaf by becoming responsible citizen in a civilized society and good children to their parents.

He said they must have a determination and purpose of life and not wasting their life in the underworld, infusing hatred against each other or other gang members or involved in gang fights which subsequently getting killed just because of territorial rights, women, dirty money or mere common hatred among the triads.

"The members of secret societies must take the opportunity to make amends and return to the society. But if they continue to create instability and threat to the security, I am sorry to say that they will eventualy face the law and as such, full enforcement will be taken against them by the police, " he added.
