BINTULU-The Department of Environment (DoE) have been urged to take firm actions against any industrial operators who had been found violating the laws on environmental protections. Bintulu Member of Parliament, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said there had been a number of industrial plants at kemena and Jepak Industrial Areas here that have continued to emit thick smokes into the air that worsen the prevailing hazy weather. "The department should not only monitor those in the sawmill industry but also the whole factories situated in the areas which seemed to have emitting thick smoke that could be hazardous to nearby residents," he told reporters here Thursday evening. Tiong also expressed his regrets with the attitudes of the industrial operators who had failed to upgrade their factories to ensure a more environmental-friendly operation by adamantly stayed with the old ways of disposing wastes. Such an attitude, he added was a clear indication of their lack of civic conciousness and failure to take the interest of the whole people here into account. On the security issue, Tiong had praised the police department in bringing down the crime rate in the division here as well as the success to lure six persons on the wanted lists to surrender themselves. He described the six persons as being brave for coming forward to face the laws and offering them an opportunity to turn on to a new life, rather than to continue becoming trouble-makers in the society. He also urged others who are still in the police wanted list to emulate the step taken by the six persons and to abandon their bids to run away from the laws after causing unnecessary problems to the people at large. Tiong assured that his People's Service Centre at the ParkCity Commerce Square would always be prepared to render their cooperation to facilitate those who wanted to give themselves up and to face justice. "There is no point for those on the wanted list from running away from the laws after their wrongdoings as I trust that no matter what a criminal attempted to do, the police would always have the upper hand to nab them eventually," he added. |
