BINTULU-The Member of Parliament here, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing has urged the Fire and Rescue Services Department (FRSD) to intensify the inspection of fire hydrants here to ensure the equipment are in good order at all time. During his personal check at Kampung Baru here Wednesday, he was saddened to note that a number of hydrants there had appeared to be in rusty condition, causing the lids covering the valves. "The Fire Department had to do something about this by conducting their inspection more frequently so that they would not be getting much problems when there is any emergency," he told reporters. Tiong made the checks on the fire hydrants after visiting the site of a fire incident that occurred 22 August this year that had charred down three houses at the village and almost claimed the live of a five-year old girl. He was told by some of the fire victims that the FRSD had arrived promptly after receiving a call about the incident but on arrival at the scene, they observed the firefighters were having difficulties to activate the nearest hydrant. As a result, the fire fighters had to search for another hydrants located at a street several houses away from the scene and the victims felt that the fire could have been extinguished much earlier should the nearest hydrant was operatable sooner. Tiong had assured the fire victims that he would be meeting with the authority concerned to notify them of the problems as well as to find out the remedial measures that had been taken. |
