BINTULU- Contractors involved in the road constructions and improvement along the Jalan Bintulu - Kampung Jepak and Jalan Bintulu-Tatau have been told to be considerate to ensure their activities will not pose hazards to road users. The Bintulu Member of Parliament, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said the measures should include the approach that the contractors adopted in removing earth, as well as the state of trucks they used to transport the earth. "The contractors should be responsible to ensure that the environment would not be adversely affected by their operation such as the drainage system as well as the road surface that could endanger road users," he told reporters here Thursday evening. He made these remarks after inspecting the condition of the Jalan Bintulu-Tatau and Jalan Bintulu-Kampung Jepak which had been complained to be hazardous for road users, especially motorcycles. Several road users had claimed to have involved in near accidents after muds on construction trucks tyres were accumulating on the surface of the road in question, causing them to be slippery during rainy days. Tiong had been told that a number of motorcyclist had lost control of their machines when travelling on the roads under the rain and there was also one incident where a four wheeled drive vehicle skidded and spin on the road towards the verge. While advising road users to take extra precaution when travelling on the road, Tiong felt that the contractors should also exercise their responsibility by ensuring the truck tyres were free from execessive muds before being brought onto the tar-sealed roads. He also urged the contractors involved to built proper crossing points on top of the drainage for their vehicles to manouvre to prevent excessive muds from filling up the drains and eventually causing flash floods. No doubt that the contractors must accomplished the projects promptly in line with meeting the needs for development here, Tiong was in a view that the livelihood of the people staying nearby and the road travellers were also as important. Tiong also hoped that the road contractors would also provide proper signs and signals that could be clearly viewed during any kind of weather on stretches to remind road users of road diversions and other hazards that could arise. He also hoped the government departments involved to monitor the operations of the contractors closely and to take necessary actions to prevent the contractors from committing anything that could case unnecessary danger to the public. |
