Bintulu LAKU Rerservoir BINTULU-Lembaga Air Kawasan Utara(LAKU) expresses concern with an alarming rate of increase in water demand over the last three weeks here and has urged the consumers to conserve supply that they have obtained. LAKU Management Sdn Bhd area manager here, Wong Tiong Kai said on Thursday that since the hot weather persisted within the second week of June this year, the consumption had risen by more than 13 percent. "It all now lies in the hands of the consumers. If they continue on to consume at the present rate, the water level at Sungai Sebiew (source of raw water for LAKU plant here) will dropped very fast," he added. The water company had taken the initiatives to issue a statement on Wednesday to advise consumers to reduce consumption of water after the level at Sungai Sebiew had dipped below the normal level of 2.5 metre. "Now the level is below 2 metres and although we still could maintain the water level at the reservoir now, with the dry weather continues and consumptions is still at the present rate, Sungai Sebiew will not be able to supply enough water for replenishment," added Wong. The consumptions for the last three weeks was recorded to rise to an average of 85 MLD (Million Litre Per Day) from the normal average of 75 MLD, and there were ocassions where the production had to be pushed up to as high as 98 MLD. In their efforts to guide the consumers to conserve water supply at this current dry season, LAKU had listed out several measures that the consumers could take. The measures include avoiding using hoses to water plants or cleaning, reusing water collected from washing clothes and vegetables for watering plants, cleaning drains, cars, patios and flushing toilets. Consumers were also advised not to take shower for an unduly duration and to repair all leaking pipes and fittings. Water taps need to be turned on only when necessary during brushing teeth, showering and washing hands, water basin for washing and to rinse dishes or vegetable and optimising washing machine to full load at all time. The final advice given by LAKU for the consumers is to "turn the water tap off whenever you are not using the water." |
