02/07/2002: Tiong Urged Rural Parents to Stay Vigilant Over Children Discipline

BINTULU--Member of Parliament for Bintulu Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing JP urged the parents, especially those at rural area to stay vigilant over their children schooling activities following numerous information received over the disciplinary problems of a few secondary school here.

In his recent longhouse visiting activities to attend the ngiling tikai ceremonies for Rh Aso, Rh. Dana and Rh Ningkan respectively, Tiong also in his common message urging the residents to place greater emphasis on the education of their children.

He said school children now were facing the challenges to concentrate on their studies as in some cases, a number had been allegedly involved in drug abuse, truancy, smoking, immoral and thugs activities.

The Member of Parliament added that disciplinary problems among school students could be curbed if the parents realised the importance of family education and cooperate with the school authorities to guide the schooling generation.

Millions of ringgit had been spent by the government to widen the opportunity for students, especially those from the rural, to attain higher standard of education and Tiong urged the parents to emphasise on education excellence to their offsprings.

He also urged the longhouse residents to avoid themselves from being engrossed in bad habits such as excessive drinkings which would only deprive them from organising their livelihoods and led to undesirable family tragedies.
