| Bintulu, Friday: The members
of the Bintulu Regional Committee of the Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and
Industry (SCCI) proposed the Technical Training Institute shall be located
here after a courtesy visit to the Resident, Encik Abdullah Chek Sahamat
last Monday.
During the visit, discussion was held on the devlopment of Bintulu, both in the short and long term. The resident explained the government's plans for Bintulu becoming an Industrial Garden City by the year 2010, with emphasis on maintaining and improving the environment for the benefit of both the people in Bintulu and Sarawak as a whole. The SCCI Bintulu pledged the chamber's full cooperation to work with the government and private industries to achieve such plans. It was recognised by both the Resident and the SCCI that the current expansion of MLNG III, the existing port and the Palm Oil Industry and the new projects like Bakun Hydro Electric (BHE) project, Borneo Pulp and Paper (BPP) and the new airport would mean an increased and continuous need for a skill based population in the Bintulu region. This available skilled based population was also essential to be able to attract further industrial investments in the area, SCCI said. Beside, SCCI also explained that this was the main objective of the courtesy visit as the SCCI is actively promoting Bintulu as the location of the proposed Technical Training Institue. The SCCI assured the Resident that Bintulu is the best place for such a training facility, elaborating that Bintulu's geographical position, the existing and expanding demand for skilled workers, and the abundance of industrial works where students can obtain in house training to supplement their technical studies. The resident agreed with the arguments put forward by the SCCI, but advised the Techinical Training Institute was currently earmarked to be located in Miri. However, Abdullah Chek Sahamat said if the SCCI could obtain the support of the local industries, the other chambers and the local politicians, he would support an application to have the institute located in Bintulu. The Resident further advised that the land would be made availalbe if private industry is successful in persuading both the State and Federal Governments to locate the facility in Bintulu...END WITH PHOTO. |
