Dato' Chor: Government Aware of Social Menace Posed by Illicit Drug
Bintulu, Tuesday: The government takes a very serious view of the social menace caused by the abuse of illicit drugs including the threat posed by the "Ecstacy Pills" and also the incidents of crimes in Sarawak.

The ministry of Home Affairs shall instruct the government enforcement agencies like the Police to look into the matters of concern to the local community brought up by the MP of Bintulu, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing after
the dialogue with the representatvies of the local Chinese guilds and associations, recently.

As regards the widespread issue of ecstasy pills, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Dato' Chor Chee Heung hoped that the local community leaders shall
continue to lend a hand to the police to nab the culprits including also conductiing and organise public educational and awareness campaigns.  

He also urged all peoples' representatives and their political parties to spearhead such a campaigns and he could assure that the police should assist in whatever ways possible.

"The government is doing whatever it takes to reduce the abuse of such illicit
drugs to a very insignificant level as the health and the future of the younger generation shall be adversely affected"

More police personnel should be deployed and constant raids should be carried
out on Karaoke and entertainment outlets which did not comply with the rules
spelt out under the licence issued, he stressed.

He said, the ministry of Housing and Local Governemnt shall issue a measure
to be adopted by the operator of all night entertainment outlets that is by displaying a "warning board"  within the premises to warn their patron and
workers of the legal consequences if caught abusing ecstasy pills and other
illicit drugs.

From now onwards, Dato Chor said any abuser caught with abusing the drug (i.e.
even for the first time) shall be charged under Section 15 of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952.

He said, more frequent patrols by the enforcement shall be conducted to prevent criminal from committing crimes in and around towns like Bintulu...END.
