06/12/2000: Tiong Urges Gangster to Turn New Leaf
Bintulu, Saturday: Member of Parliament Tiong King Sing today called on members of secret societies in Sarawak to make amend to their life and turn into a new leaf by becoming responsible citizen in a civilized society and as good
children to their parents.

He said they must have a determination and purpose of life and not wasting
their life in the underworld, in fusing hatred against each other or other gang members or involved in gang fights which subsequently getting killed just
because of territorial rights, women or dirty money.

Tiong was responding to a spate of killings, believed to have been committed
by feuding gang members, which occured separately in several ganglands in
major towns in Sarawak such as Bintulu, Sibu, Miri or Kuching over the past
few months.

He said, gang fights usually ended up with someone killed, nevertheless, the
killer could probably ended up dead one of these days in a vicious cycle of
gangsterism.

Tiong advised those involved in crime would eventually have to pay their deeds
as not only other gang members from other secret society would be tailing them, the police too would be hot on heels for them.

He said these gang members' activities were not only immoral as their livelihood depended on "dirty money" like prostitution extortion and protection money, drugs, gambling and other illegal activities.

Tiong said they were challenging the police and the laws of the country by
continuing their activities the way they did and the police would not hesitate
to put a stop on their activities.

"They think they are above the law and the laws of the country connot touch
them as they as they are quick to escape from the long hands of the law"

He said, some of them even think it is "cool" to be a gangster as they will
be well regarded and looked upon like heroes especially to impress young
women," he said adding that it was wrong for the youngsters to emulate the
gangsters' activities or way of life.

It is also wrong for young women to be impressed by this sort of people who
are only interested in seducing them. These young women should think of their
future when they make these unscrupulous people as their partners.

Tiong said via various influences by Hong Kong ganster movies and violent
cartoons, he had came across children or teenagers who looke up and fancy at
these secret society memberbers as heroes, adding that many secret societies
also conducted intiation rites to get more teenagers or student to become
members.
Tiong said these so-called heroes were actually "empty can" that made a lot
of noise but served no purpose at all, adding that they are considered dangerous elements to the social fabric of the society.

"What fustrates us is that these gangster are not only a threat to the society
as many of them are feared by the community and they take laws into their hands"

Beside, he said they were also posing unending prombles to their own families
once they caught up by the police, they would not only have problems with
laws, they would also have weeping children and wife or heartbroken parents.

"Can't they think how difficult it was for their mother to give birth and raised them, giving them what they wanted: a good home as shelter, food and good clothes, protection and education"

He believed all the parents had been hoping their sons or daughters would turn
out well one day and be good and responsible individuals and continuing the
generation in the future, especially for the poor families.

Tiong said, the parents usually would be the ones who had to share the blame
and the shame, as the community would point fingers to them (the parents) for
failing to raise the children accordingly and instill good family values in
them.

"Instead of bringing shame and disrepute to the family good name , they should
think hard how to make amends with their life. They could do almost anything
to change their lifestyle but for a start they must start by showing immense
respect to their parents"

He said there had been cases in which they were caught by the law and were
banished to another district for several years, their wife and children would
be the ones who suffered the most because they lived far apart.

"Don't they realize what their children will be eating today or the next day?"

He said, many of them are angry with the government because they are banished
but it was their mistakes in the first place that caused them to be banished
to another place, district or state, or worse, they are sentenced to death
penalty on a more serious offence.

He said one should always thinking the future ahead and life could offer to
their wife and children.

"The wife could start her life all over again by gaining employment or worse,
re-marry but the children would have difficulty of accepting and understanding
the sudden and abrupt changes in their life"

Tiong advised the gangsters, majority of who are still young between their
teens to 30's to look for another job that was straight and honest.

The job, although does not pay well is better than extorting money from helpless people or lurking in the wee of the night carrying out illegal activities.  Instead they are willing to risk their lives and living dangerously all the time.

He also urged the public to give their full support to former members of secret societies who have past criminal records, a chance to change their life as they have repented.

Meanwhile, Tiong said there were also gang members who becomes "cassanovas"
who pried on young innocent girls.  Many young women have been raped or outraged their modesty by these roving gang members who spiked their drinks
during an outing at discos.

It is understood that some of the popular durgs used by these unscrupulous sex
maniac are Golden Dragon Fly, Astacies and a mixture of carbonated drinks like
Coca-cola with 15 drops of a famous brand eye drops. The Golden Dragon Fly and
Astacies are pounded into powder and the powder is usually flicked into small
doses under the fingernails without the victim's knowledge into her drinks.

"I understand these young women become victim after drinking intoxicated or
spiked drinks and subsequently they were raped by their "cassanova" boyfriend
or acquaintances."

"I want them to think about what they did to these innocent girls. What future
lies ahead to these girls? What if some one did the same act on your daughter
one day in the future?  What would you feel then when someone tells yours
daughter that her father once did this to someone else's daughter"

Tiong also advised parents to educate and raised their children according to good moral and religious values.

It is important that parents are stricter with their children now rather than
be sorry in the future if their children become wild and beyond control...END.
