| Bintulu, Saturday:
Member of Parliament for Bintulu Tiong King Sing today supported the call
by Sarawak State Secretary Datuk Amar Haji Abdul Aziz Hussain that the
state government would not hesitate to take disciplinary action against
government servants who are lazy and palyed truant.
Decribing the call as the right attitude and most appropriate stance, he said the State Secretary's Statement clearly indicated the State Government was serious in protecting its image while ensuring the service rendered to the rakyat was at par excellence. "There is no place for lazy government servants who play truant at the expense of the public, " he said, adding that both government servants and officers must be reminded all the time that they were employed to serve the people and not otherwise. Tiong said that state should also take action against government officers, who misused their authority, violated regulations and work ethics and refused to adhere to instructions and directives. He said it was pertinent that the government monitored these officers and public servants because they were the front-liners of an effective and efficient government. These officers were the portrayal of a good and efficient government. If they work against the government's policies and aspiration, the public will continue to have a bad impression of the government's administrative system," he said. Tiong also agreed to the Datuk Amar Hj. Abdul Aziz that the state government would take immediate actions against its servants who violated the regulations and discipline while on duty, apart from not adheing to directives. "There are a small number of officers who are senseless in direction, blunt in people management and crude in their actions when dealing with the public. Not only that, they totally disregard the wishes of the people, thinking that they are right all the time, he said. Tiong said these were the officers that the government should monitor and take action against, as they were the "bad apples" which were ruining the image of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government. He said there were a small number of senior officers who practiced little diplomacy or none at all while dealing the rakyat, thinking that they were the "Kings" who decided for the people and showed little respect to the wishes of the people. "Sometimes, the members of the public, who had urgent matters to discuss had to wait for a long time after the officer agreed to see them " "But in many occasions, it was just a futile wait, as they could not even see the officers at all, " he said. On the other hand, he said there were a small number of officers who showed that they were hard working and had performed up to the expectation of their superiors at the headquarters or the state level, but to the eyes of the ordinary man on the street, they were nothing more than "pen-pushers" who dispensed their duties at their whims and fancies. As what they delivered to the people was not practical at all, thus wasting public funds, he said that happens because they did not know how to differentiate between prioritized or urgent projects and those projects which were less urgent. He said there were officers who thought they were well versed with the government administrative system, but some of the actions taken by these officers were a total violation of the Government's General Order. "I have across with a few officers who carried out their duties without prior discussion and approval from their superiors. They just bulldozed their own way ot suit their interests and personal agenda," he said, adding that it was unfortunate the government still kept these officers in service as their actions would bring disrepute to the image of the government. However, Tiong King Sing said there were government officers who improved significantly after being criticized by the public for shoddy performance. It was amazing to see that these officers managed to rise to the occasion, overcoming their guilt and wrong doing, when they were criticized rather than feeling vindictive or demoralized, he added. "They took a positive and pro-active stance in improving their services to the people. These officers braved the critisms and they took the criticisms as something constructive to regain the people's confidence. The people, on the receiving end, were very happly with their improved performance," he said, adding that these officers, who set good examples, should be recommended for promotions in the future if or when there was an apportunity. Tiong also urged government
officers, who slacked in their jobs to inculcate good work ethics and adopt
a more pro-active and creative approach in improving their performance
and services to the people...END WITH NO PHOTO.
