| BINTULU, Mon.-Principals and teachers in schools are urged to be brave in execute disciplinary actions on problematic students as to stop more and more social problems created by the youths. Member of Parliament for Bintulu, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said although there is a increasing problems created by students, teachers should not give up this noble job. "You must not keep the problems for yourself, but instead discuss among your colleagues and tell the government to take the appropriate actions", he said this when officiating at the opening of the annual general meeting of Bintulu Branch Sarawak Teachers' Union (STU) at Plaza Hotel here last Saturday afternoon. Tiong also advised teachers not to involve themselves in politics as they have to be fully concentrate on the teaching profession. "It is wrong to instigate the students to go on strike for certain reasons and for person gain", he said. He said it is better for those who are really interested in politics to resign from teaching and go to the ground to solve the peoples' probelms and let the teaching job to be filled by those dedicated teachers. President of STU, Mr Willian Ghani Bina said that teaching is a specified profession in which teachers need to be trained and certified. Therefore, he said over congestion in town schools and shortage of trained teachers will create disciplinary problems. To reduce such problems, school should limited the number of students to 40 for primary school and 35 per class for secondary schools and each school with a limited of only 1,000 stduents, he said. Therefore, he said the government should allocate sufficient fund to construct more school facilities for the running of a single "Double sessions has limited the time spent in school and resulted in short of the senseof beloging among the students and the love of the school is not there", he added. Chairman of Bintulu Branch STU, Mr Richard Wong said that there are 778 members in the branch. He urged all the members to participate actively in their programmes. He said at the moment Mandarin teachers will have to get a credit in Bahasa Malaysia before they are qualify to teach Chinese. For the welfare of members, he hoped that the government will assist to build more houses for teachers and the Bintulu STU to acquire a shop lot for their own building. | |
