25/06/2000: Developer Urged to Cease Operation in Land Dispute
Bintulu, Sunday: The Member of Parliament (MP) for P190 Bintulu Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing JP urged the plantation company to cease its present clearing works along Bintulu-Sebauh road before any mutual agreement achieved between the company and local residents.

As he was told,  residents of more than six affected longhouses were willingly to solve the dispute  amicably pending on the proposed compensation scheme for  their farmlands and crops.

However,  the residents protested to Tiong about the inappropriate way of the contractor to bulldoze thier farmlands disregarded to peoples' complaints.

Some of the residents, Tiong said they only wanted their crops to be compensated  according to  the present compensation rate of Land & Survey, by accepting the facts of their non-NCR lands  status.

Tiong told the BP here after a dialogue session held at his people service centre which attended by more than 100  longhouse residents yesterday, adding that most of the affected residents were caught in panic in a recent clearing works that was carried out by contractor of Tabung Haji plantation without any notification.

The six longhouses along the Sg. Selezu and Sg. Sepedok are Rh. Kan, Rh. Madel, Rh. Unggan, Rh. Rengi, Rh. Aji and Rh. Tunkat, from Miles 18 to 24 Bintulu-Sebauh road.

The MP also very much regretted that  neither the personnel-in-charge nor the representative of the company attended the dialogue session as promised.

As a member of one of the government agencies, he said  such attitude of the company personnel would taint the good image of people-caring government which also created mis-understanding between the people and government.

He further stressed that such attitude of the incharge personnel also spoilt the goodwill of Tabung Haji as a reputable agencies to assist the poors and needies.

Nevertheless, he urged the residents not to act emotionately whereas confrontation would never  be the best approach to solve the dispute by adducing the Niah bloodshed incidents which only leaving the families of arrested suspects in agonies.

"We shouldn't let our anger driving us to commit any deeds that violate the laws"
Tiong, who also visited the affected longhouses yesterday evening,   also learned that some of the alerted residents even patrolling their farmlands these few days to prevent any surprise intrusion of the company contractor.

In his visit to the affected longhouses yesterday, a resident told Tiong that about 350 of his pepper crops, 1650 rubber trees and 500 of his fruit tress were bulldozed by forcing him to accept the offer rate between RM1 to RM5 per tree.

Although the resident accpeted the fact of  his farmland as Non-NCR land, he said the company concerned should proposed a fair compensation schem as Land & Survey Department prior to the commissioning of any clearing works.

Among who present at the visit were Teo Ho Ping, special assistant to Dato' Seri Tiong,  SNAP Kemena Chairman Liew Ah Lek , SNAP Kidurong Chairman Jackson and members of Tiong's People Welfare Section.
