24/06/2000: Violence on Land Issues Should be Avoided
BINTULU, Sat.-People in the rural areas are urged not to provoke violence on land issue as this could not bring any helps to solve the problems, but instead will caused bigger problems to the community.

Making the advice here this morning, Member of Parliament for Bintulu, Dato' Seri Tiong King Sing said that anyone who resort to violence is a criminal offence and will face the consequences.

He further advise the people to be patient as the government or the authority concerned will need to take a little time to solve any land disputes.

Tiong was speaking to a group of longhouse headmen and their representatives from Sepadoi and Jalan Ulu Sebauh areas during a dialogue session at his office here this morning.

These longhouse representatives have raised many problems on land disputes and the development of plantations at the rural area, which they claimed was Native Customary Right land.

Tiong said that he understood their problems but sometime the problems could not be solved quickily because there was a mis-communication and inefficiency of some government and its agencies officers. For example, he said he has invited the relevant government officers to attend this dialogue but the latters did not turn up this morning.

"I will have to check what has gone wrong and report to the higher authority", he added.

Tiong urged them to give him a little time to discuss with the developer at the higher authority before he can help to solve the problems.

At the moment, he said he will ask the company concerned to stop works temporary on this area, waiting for the directives 
from the higher level.

Also present at the dialogue session were chairman of Sarawak National Party (SNAP) Kemena Division, Mr Liew Ah Leh and personal representative to Bintulu MP, Mr Teo Ho Ping..
