30/11/1999: More Chinese Votes Turn to BN Tiong

BINTULU, Tues.-More Chinese votes in the town areas here have turned 
to Barisan Nasional (BN) at this Parliamentary election to help the 
BN to wrest back the seat from the opposition.

From 21 ballot boxes at the town area, about 33.5 per cent votes went to BN, while almost 66.5 per cent voted for DAP. 

The Chinese votes for BN this time was higher as compared to the Parliamentary  election in 1995, when DAP Chiew Chiu Sing turned giant killer to defeat BN's Datuk Amar James Wong by 1,794 votes majority. 

During  the last electon when DAP won the seat, BN only obtained about 26 per cent votes from the town areas, while DAP got over 74 per cent.

Minister for Housing, Datuk Celestine Ujang, who is the State Assemblyman for Kemena, one of the three constitunecies under Bintulu Parliament seat said that the turn of Chinese voters here was also one of the important factors for BN to wrest back the seat from the DAP.

When the result was officially announced at about 12.30 midnight, BN's new comer Dato' Tiong King Sing turned giant killer this time  by defeating DAP's strongman and theonly MP in Sarawak, Mr Chiew 
Chiu Sing. Tiong polled 15,681 against Chiew's 14,281.

The majority was 1,400 with 422 spoilt votes. Turn out percentage of 66.28 was also higher than the last election with only 62.5 per cent.

Bintulu Parliamentary seat has 46,193 voters, comprising three State seats, Kemena (13,790), Kidurong (20,821) and Jepak (11,582).

For the Chinese based town area, BN obtained 3,089 votes from 21 ballot boxes at 6 polling stations, namely Pimpin kindergarten, WI Building, Red Crescent Building, S.K. St Anthony, SJK Chung Hua Tg. Batu and SMK Bintulu. DAP obtained 6,144 votes from these stations.

For the polling stations at upriver Kemena, BN obtained about 64 per cent votes, while almost 66 per cent voters in Jepak area  (including Kampungs at Bintulu town) voted for BN.
