Like the late
Martin
Luther King, he had envisioned for his fellow American- African
community in 1960s, he literally began his vision with "I have a dream..."
Likewise in Bintulu, I have
a dream to fulfill and to turn Bintulu, once a sleepy hollow and with a
"back- water" image, into a fully developed society with a post- industrial
economy by the year 2020.
Vision 2020 has given Malaysians
a clear sense of direction,
renewed optimism and enthusiasm as well as heightened dynamism. We have
entered a new millennium with a firm purpose - to become a fully developed
country by the year 2020.
Our beloved the former Prime
Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad had that dream when
be drew up the Vision 2020 in February 1991 for Malaysians to hold tightly
on, so as his sucessor,
the
present Prime Minister Yang Amat Berhormat Dato' Seri Abdullah bin Haji
Ahmad Badawi. |
| "Hopefully,
the Malaysian who is born today and in the years to come will he the last
generation of oat citizens who will be living in a country that is called
"developing,".
The ultimate objective that
we must aim for is a Malavsia that is fully developed by the year 2020.
Malaysia should not be developed
only in the economic sense.
It must be a nation that
is fully developed along the dimensions: economically, socially, spiritually
, psychologically and culturally. |

We must be
fully developed in terms of national unity and social cohesion, in term
of our economy, in terms of social justice, politictil stabiiity, system
of Government, quality of life, social and sipiritual values, national
pride and confidence.
By the year 2020, Malaysia
can be a united nation with a confident Malaysian society, infused by strong
Moral and ethical values, living in a society that is democratic , liberal
and tolerant, caring, economically just and equitable, progressive and
prosperous, and in full Possession of an economy that is competitive. dynamic,
robust and resilent. |
| Likewise, it
is my fervent hope to see Bintulu to be fully developed not only economically
but also in all other ways.
Sustainable development shall
be a major guiding principle in our efforts to build an economy, which
is dynamic, progressive and resilient. For the coming years, I have identified
three strategic thrusts to move Bintulu forward in this millennium. |
