16/05/2008: Committee To Discuss People's Issues, Postponing Mega Projects Proposed

KUALA LUMPUR, May 15-- The Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) today proposed that the government set up a special committee to discuss issues of public interest raised by parliamentarians and postponing the mega projects.

Its chairman Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said to make the commitee effective, BNBBC proposed that all views and suggestions to be reportedly directly to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"The committee can discuss issues like the oil royalty, politics, balanced development between regions, security and illegal migrants," he said in a press statement issued at parliament here, Thursday.

The Bintulu MP said the government needed to consider postponing mega projects under the Ninth Malaysia Plan and the allocations instead be used for more urgent projects like flood mitigation, agriculture and basic amenities for rural areas.

He also proposed that the government increase allocations for the Rural and Regional Developmment Ministry and the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry for carrying out welfare projects for the people, like single mothers, orphans, the disabled and senior citizens.

"The Public Housing Programme must also be given priority so that the objectives of Vision 2020 can be achieved," he said.

Tiong said the national leadership must pay serious attention to the concerns voiced by the MPs during the debates in the Dewan Rakyat as they were conveying the problems and hopes of their respective constituents.

"These are the voices of the people from the peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak, especially those from the rural and interior areas, for their problems to be solved as soon as possible.

"The provision of basic facilities like water and electricity supply and roads must be given top priority, he said.
