MP Dato Seri Tiong King Sing called on the government to work out a way
to ensure the job quality of the civil servants.
Speaking in the parliament last Thursday in support of the Pension Bill that was currently being debated, Tiong, who is also the chairman of the Parliament's Back Bencher Club, said there must be an effort to care not only for the pensioners, but, to ensure that these workers gave quality service when they were in the government service. He said mindset of some of these workers must change to ensure an efficient government machinery. "For some civil servants with negative working attitude, they have viewed their jobs as ones which are as stable as "an iron rice bowl" that is unbreakable." He said these workers lacked zeal. "Very often, when they are needed by the people for their service, they are nowhere to be found. After all, they know that they will not be sacked, and for a wrong doing, the most that they will expect to get is a demotion or a transfer." Because of such working attitude, he said it had frustrated the people when they approached these civil servants for help. "In the end, it is not these workers who are to be blamed. Instead, the BN Government will always have to shoulder this when the people voice venge their anger on them." Therefore, to ensure civil servants would be responsible, he felt they must face the consequences and expect to be sacked as well. Tiong felt that because of such negative working attitude, some civil servants had even felt they were not only holding an iron rice bowl in their hand, but, an alloy bowl. |
