| BINTULU:
A Rakan Muda Club will be set up in each parliamentary constituency in
the country to promote and plan for youth activities in the country.
Replying Bintulu MP Dato Seri Tiong King Sing in the parliamentary sitting last week, the Youth and Sports Ministry said altogether, a total of 219 clubs would be formed. It said this was the nation's effort to rejuvenate the youth in their mission towards nation building. "In setting new directions for them, various activities have been planned. Among them is one that aims towards community quality living." With the back up of the local councils, it said this programme would promote various aspects of living, like in art and culture, social welfare, promoting a loving and caring society, environmental conservation, skills of entrepreneurship, agriculture, science and human resource development." The ministry said they would also set up a secretariat in each district to coordinate this work. "There are already 32 schools registering with us. With the Rakan Muda movements in each region, they will work with their headquarters and with the State Government's Cultural, Youth and Sports Ministry. "This will help to build their ground work at the State, district and village levels." The ministry said they would also set up centres to coordinate the youth work, adding that 16 among them had been turned into activity centres for youth training, registration and administrative management for the movement and their activities." He said in KL last year, they launched a programme at Sungei Wang Shopping Complex aimed at eradicating social ills among urban youths. "We hoped to create a loving and caring society towards the physical and mental development of the youths." This year, the ministry added, they would move on to host more of such activity in Johore, Trenggannu, Pahang, Selangor and Penang. Towards international youth work coordination, the ministry said they would promote goodwill among young people with those outside the country. It said their first target was working with youths in the Asean countries through voluntary work. The ministry said they had sent a group to Cambodia last December as as volunteers. "This has helped to expose them and helped build their confidence and communication skills. "In future, we plan to send youths to South Africa, Vietnam and other countries as well." The ministry hoped to train members of Rakan Muda into responsible youths and ones who were active, confident, disciplined and ones who would stay on the track in nation building. "Such direction is important because youths are the future leaders of the nation." The ministry said this in reply to Tiong, who had asked on how effective the Rakah Muda movement had been in training young people. In reply to Tiong's another question on the position of Rakan Muda in the ministry, it said said the committee was being set up on contract basis. "It is approved by the Public Service Ministry and Finance Ministry." |
