29/02/2008: Tiong urges voters to discard Sure-win Attitude

BINTULU: BN candidate for Bintulu Dato Seri Tiong King Sing called on the voters to discard the sure-win attitude for the Barisan Nasional party in the coming election.

In his message to them, he said the people must not have such mindset to feel that it was unnecessary for them to go to the poll because the Barisan Nasional candidate would surely win.

"Because of this, some will bet heavily on the election results and this will prevent the conduct of a fair election."

Incumbent Tiong is seeking to retain his seat in the current election. Speculation has been rift that it will be a "sure-win" situation for him because of his contribution not only in Bintulu, but in the whole of Sarawak, especially in his commitment with the police to eliminate gangsterism.

In his message, Tiong said victory in the Barisan Nasional had not come easily, adding that it needed the efforts of all, and not the show for a lone ranger.

"My strength in politics has come from the power of the people, and it is in this strength that I shall walk with them and in accordance with their wish. In other words, I come from the people and I am for the people."

As their representative in the government, Tiong said he had always worked in the BN spirit to build a nation of harmony, stability and prosperity.

"The Barisan Nasional representatives have always been as a bridge between the people and the government, and it is in this spirit that we are all out for the people.

"We do not deliver empty promises. Under the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi, we work in the national interests of all people."

He hoped the voters would retain the Barisan Nasional Government so that development could continue for the next five years.

"The voters should seriously consider this for their future generations.

"Remember, never gamble your future away. Never bet in an election, and never have such an arrogant sure-win attitude."

Tiong said he himself had heard of people here talking about being "sure-win" for him in the election.

"This has made me worried. The BN Government builds its strength in the faith of the people and not in their guessing game.

"Don't go for short-term benefits like winning in the election bet and forego the children's future. You may win in the bet, but, your children will lose their future. Say no to gambling."

Tiong, in his message, said as the people's representative in the last parliamentary term, he had worked his best to remain close to them.

He thanked them for inviting him to their associations' functions and other social events.

"There were times when I could not attend due to my work schedule. If there is anything that me and my team of helpers have not worked to the expectations of the people, we shall continue to serve and improve.

"Even if my election workers have not been able to work to their expectations, I apologise. We shall continue to serve with all sincerity and humility with and for the people."
