| BINTULU:
Bintulu MP Dato Seri Tiong King Sing called on the operators of recycle
centres here to stop buying scrap iron from thieves.
In a press statement yesterday, he said thefts of scrap metals had become rampant, and he had received numerous public complaints. He said "only when the buying stops, so will the thefts. Therefore, recycle operator should stop buying these stolen items". He said among the items the thieves had conveniently reached for were the metal manhole lids on the roads and pavements. He warned that taking away these lids could easily cause pedestrians to fall in, and injuries arising from this could be serious. "Will you feel at ease that a victim has to bleed like this for your pocket?" he asked the operators. He condemned the selfish buyers, saying that they lacked the professional ethic. "The stealing have become common occurrences and the crimes become rampant. If public properties continue to end up with the thieves and these recycle centres, what is the point for the government to build the infra-structure facilities?" Tiong, who is also the chairman of the Back Benchers' Club, called on the police to step up measures to control the crimes. "Catching the thieves and preventing the crimes are a part of the solution. But, I hope the police will check on the recycle centres as well to catch operators for buying the stolen items." He said the police must act to prevent the current situation from getting worst. He hoped the offenders would be prosecuted. "If the operators do not refrain from buying these stolen items, they will regret one day." Meanwhile, Tiong shows concern over the closure of Bernas warehouse in Sibu for investigation into invoice irregularities. |
