10/04/2008: Tiong thanks operator of scrap metal centre move out from residential area

  • THANKS FOR THE COOPERATION: The owner of a metal recycle centre in a residential area is moving out.
BINTULU: Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing was happy today that the owner operating a recycle centre in the residential area along Jalan Bintulu-Miri has decided to move out.

In a press statement received here today, Tiong, who is also a Justice of the Peace, said the move had come timely because a lot of the residents there had been  complaining about the environmental hazard that the industrial operation in their neighbourhood had caused.

He said the operator had started moving the recycling metal materials out yesterday and he hoped this would serve as a reminder to all other operators to abide by the laws in their such undertakings.

He thanked the operator for his cooperation with the authority concerned, saying that residents there were relieved yesterday.

In the appeal of Tiong published in the Borneo Post on Monday, the MP called on the operator to move his business operation out of the residential area due to the environmental hazard it had caused.

He said it was illegal for such an industrial activity to be conducted permanently on a residential site.

He called on the Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) to look into the complaints of the people.

According to the neighbours, the operator has not only sprawled recycled items, mainly metal pieces and structures, all over the compound of his rented place, the items had also been spilt onto the road, causing traffic obstruction.

The operator was said to have managed his business there for a few years.
