| BINTULU: Most medical
specialists from Peninsula Malaysia are unwilling to serve at general hospitals
in Sarawak for fear that their future career would be at stake.
Bintulu Member of Parliament Dato Seri Tiong King Sing said the feedback he received from specialists was that they were forbidden to set up their own clinics in Sarawak after serving at the respective hospitals in the State. “They feel that after serving many years in Sarawak and building up good rapport with local populace, they will have to return to their respective states in Peninsula Malaysia. There, the people will not be familiar with them and their medical expertise if they venture into private practice,” said Tiong. In his personal opinion, Tiong said the relevant authorities could review the policy in allowing these medical specialists to practise in Sarawak after completing their services with the government at general hospitals in Sarawak. He remarked this was one of the ways to lure specialists to serve in Sarawak since there was a shortage of specialists in Sarawak. “In my opinion, their services are urgently needed here,” he added. Tiong said this while attending the Mooncake Festival celebration organised by Bintulu Ling Clan Association at Parkcity Everly Hotel last Saturday evening. Touching on disciplinary problems, he called on all the local Chinese associations to take the initiative to organise courses, seminars or talks related to self-discipline, character building, motivation and self improvement for students during semester breaks or holidays. “You can invite lawyers, police and other officers from enforcement agencies or education department to conduct courses or seminars for the students,” said Tiong. He said it was important to instill self-discipline and mould good character among the students and give the necessary guidance while they were young. “Expelling students from the school will never resolve the discipline problem as eventually they would end up as members of a gang,” remarked Tiiong. Commenting on why he always touched on local issues related to social problem and not on development agenda or fund allocation, Tiong said if the populace were to be upset all sorts of social problems and could not have peace of mind, they still cannot enjoy the prosperity brought about by development. Tiong said he knew there were people who hated him for his work but as “an MP, I will continue to bring up issues for the betterment of the community”. “I have done everything
with a clear conscience and I will continue to speak out,” added Tiong. |
