14/09/2007:  IGP told to probe, act on errant police officers

KUALA LUMPUR: Backbenchers yesterday asked Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Musa Hassan to act on inefficient and non-dedicated police officers.

In making the call, Bintulu MP Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said this was a serious matter that warranted the IGP’s immediate attention, as it would result in the people losing confidence in the credibility of the police force.

“I also want the IGP to look into the promotion system in the police force as there are cases of inefficient officers getting promoted easily.

“This is unfair as there are many other deserving officers,” he said when debating the Budget 2008 in the Dewan Rakyat.

Citing the situation in his constituency, Tiong claimed the CID chief there was not performing his duties diligently and did not investigate cases thoroughly, resulting in the cases pending unsolved till today.

“For instance, in an underage girl rape case, the parents are questioning why until now the investigations have not been concluded.

“The investigating officer has promised to investigate and take action, but till today nothing has happen.

“When the IGP posted a new CID chief, he asked for the case file but the file was missing, no doctors’ report and the suspect got away scot-free.

“This proves the police have not been doing their work. I want the IGP to take stern action on this matter,” he said.

The issue raised by Tiong caught the attention of several MPs who called for the police force to be revamped to improve the public delivery system.

“I hope the IGP will take immediate action; we don’t want to hear anymore things like these because the victims are the people.

“Police officers who are about to retire, if possible, bring forward their retirement date,” said Datuk Mohd Said Yusof (BN-Jasin).

Datuk Bung Mokhtar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) called for errant and corrupt police officers to be sacked from the force and be replaced with more credible officers.

“There are qualified and quality police officers but the IGP is still protecting non-performing officers. If the people did not trust the police force, who will?” he asked.— Bernama
