BINTULU: The so-called supporters and promoters of the United Malays National Organisation (Umno) in the State have been urged to stop flying the flags of the political party in the State.

In making the call Saturday night, Bintulu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said this was proper because Umno was not registered in Sarawak.

Saying that he respected the wishes of the Umno supporters in the State, he stressed the supporters must be mindful of the rules and laws that everyone was expected to observe and follow.

Tiong felt that the Sarawak supporters of Umno, the biggest political party in the country and the backbone of the Barisan Nasional (BN) at the national level, should not spoil the present friendly tie between the BN parties in the State and Umno by continuing to fly the flags.

He was speaking at a function jointly organised by the Youth Wing and Women Section of Bintulu Foochow Association.

The function was organised to present incentive awards to children of members who excelled in last year’s public examinations and also to pay reverence to senior citizens aged 80 years old and above.

The function was held at the civic centre.

Tiong also cautioned the people against politicians who would make their presence felt when elections were around the corner.

“These politicians will make all kind of promises in their attempt to fish for votes,” he said, urging the people not to be hoodwinked by their promises.

He said responsible politicians or representatives would be around all the time and would not wait until election time.
On a separate issue, Tiong called on operators of pubs and karaoke lounges here to ensure patrons did not indulge in the selling of dangerous drugs within their premises.

He also urged the police to look into the matter seriously and take appropriate action against the culprits.

Organising chairman Hii Toh Hing, who also spoke, said unity among the people of various races was important to ensure the country and the people continued to enjoy progress, peace and prosperity.

Bintulu Foochow Association chairman Ting Siew Ching also spoke.
